What is an Evaporative Cooler?

The standard air conditioning system circulates chemical refrigerant to carry out heat exchange—i.e. moving heat from the inside of the house and exhausting it outside. It continually circulates the indoor air through the ventilation system. An evaporative cooler works on a different principal. The system draws air from the outside of the house, then runs it across a pad kept damp through pump action. The air loses heat to the water in the pads, the same way wind feels cooler after blowing across a lake. The conditioned air then moves into the ductwork system.

This process gives evaporative coolers a number of advantages:

  • Lower energy consumption than standard air conditioners, since they only need to power the fan and the pumps rather than multiple fans and a larger compressor.
  • Fresher air. Rather than recirculating indoor air, evaporative coolers draw fresh air into the home.
  • Humidity control in dry conditions. Water moisture also enters the air drawn through the system.

Is Evaporative Cooler System Installation Right for Your Home?

The reason you don’t see evaporative coolers in every home despite these advantages is that they aren’t ideal in all situations. They may struggle in strong heat conditions and are less effective in humid weather because water won’t evaporate easily into air that’s already filled with moisture. Before you arrange for an evaporative cooler system replacement or installation, consult with our HVAC service technicians. They can determine if using an evaporative cooler system replacement for your current AC matches your home’s comfort requirements.
