Electrical Safety for Kids: Spring & Summer Home Safety Tips

Home | Blog | Published on June 22nd, 2026

Spring and summer bring longer days, backyard play, pool time, and more family activity around the house. That also means children are more likely to encounter cords, outlets, outdoor equipment, and electrical devices they may not fully understand. For trusted help with electrical in Memphis, Automatic Air Conditioning, Heating, Plumbing & Electric is here to help families keep their homes safer all season long.

At Automatic Air, we know your home is where your children learn, play, relax, and grow. A few simple habits can reduce electrical risks and help kids understand what to avoid before a dangerous situation occurs.

Teach Kids to Respect Outlets and Cords

Start with the basics. Children should know that outlets are not toys, cords should never be pulled from the wall, and nothing should be inserted into an electrical outlet. If you have younger children, install tamper-resistant outlets or outlet covers in bedrooms, playrooms, living rooms, and any other areas where kids spend time.

Look around your home for damaged cords, loose plugs, or extension cords running under rugs. These can create tripping hazards, overheating, or shock risks. If a cord looks frayed, cracked, or warm to the touch, unplug it and replace it.

Practice Safe Outdoor Play

Spring and summer often move the fun outside, but outdoor electrical safety deserves extra attention. Remind kids to stay away from pad-mounted transformers, utility boxes, outdoor outlets, and power lines. Kites, balloons, drones, and long pool poles should never be used near overhead lines.

Before children play in the yard, check that outdoor outlets have weatherproof covers and GFCI protection. GFCI outlets are designed to shut off power quickly when they detect a problem, which is especially important in damp outdoor areas.

Keep Water Away From Electricity

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Teach children never to touch electrical devices with wet hands, to plug in electronics near sinks, or to use radios, chargers, phones, or tablets near pools, sprinklers, or bathtubs.

If your family uses outdoor fans, speakers, string lights, or pool equipment, make sure everything is rated for outdoor use. Indoor cords and devices are not built to handle moisture, heat, and changing weather.

Be Careful With Summer Storms

Spring and summer weather can bring thunderstorms, high winds, and power outages. Teach children to come indoors when thunder starts and to avoid touching plugged-in electronics during severe weather.

After a storm, keep kids away from downed lines, damaged electrical boxes, and standing water near electrical equipment. Always assume a fallen wire is live, and call the utility company or emergency services right away.

Make Electrical Safety a Family Habit

The best safety lessons are repeated often. Walk through your home with your children and point out what is safe, what is off-limits, and when they should ask an adult for help. If you notice flickering lights, buzzing outlets, frequently tripped breakers, or older wiring, let a licensed professional take a look for peace of mind this season.
